An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper put his life on the line and fought off a bull that was trampling a man in Benson, Arizona.

The DPS trooper, Brandon Jacquez, was off-duty and driving home in Benson, southeast of Tucson, when a bull attack was called out.

Even though he was off-duty, he recognized he was the closest to the scene, so he quickly drove to the home.

Once he arrived on scene, he saw an older man being trampled and gored by the bull as neighbors attempted to help. DPS says the man was severely injured and lying on the ground not moving.

Both Trooper Jacquez and a neighbor distracted the bull, and once the bull moved away from man, Jacquez used lethal force on it. The two then aided the man until medics arrived and airlifted him to a hospital.

Troopers say the victim is suffering life-threatening injuries but neighbors say the man is "amazingly tough and determined to recover."

"Trooper Jacquez put his life on the line to help both the victim and my husband," a neighbor said. "If he had not been there…I fear the outcome might have been very different. In my mind he is a hero for being instrumental in preventing what could have been an unthinkable tragedy."

The neighbor also said Trooper Jacquez helped stop any further injury to the man, and her husband who was also injured while trying to stop the bull.
