Four people are dead following a wrong-way crash that occurred just after midnight on Sunday, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

According to DPS, a wrong-way vehicle was reported driving southbound in the northbound lane on I-19 near milepost 46 around 12:45 a.m.

The wrong-way driver, a 52-year-old woman, collided head-on with a Nissan Sentra occupied by a mother and her three sons.

DPS says the mother, as well as two of her children, were killed in the crash. The third (and youngest) son was air-lifted to Banner UMC with life-threatening injuries.

The wrong-way driver also died in the crash. DPS says impairment will be determined by the medical examiner.

Colonel Frank Milstead, the Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, tweeted about the fatal crash on Sunday.

"The toll impaired drivers take on our friends/family and neighbors," Milstead wrote. "A horrific night for my Troopers."

The investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing.
