An innovative program aimed to help keep kids safe in and around vehicles has kicked off in hopes of educating and training both parents and caregivers.

KidsandCars.org hosted a public event on Wednesday to launch "Childproof Your Ride," which is the first program developed to focus on making environments around and in vehicles safe for everyone. According to a news release, the program was rolled out in Kansas and Missouri.

“While most public-safety focus goes into how vehicles interact on the road, making sure vehicles are safe environments especially for the most vulnerable among us is a vital yet overlooked aspect of auto safety," said State Farm spokesperson Kevin Gamble. State Farm Insurance is supporting KidsandCars with the program through a grant.

KidsandCars lists vehicle crashes as being the number one killer of children in the U.S.. “It is common for people to think of their vehicles simply as a means for getting from point A to point B. When it comes to protecting children, every environment has risks. Vehicles can be one of the most dangerous environments that children and families encounter every day," said Director Amber Rollins.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to visit the program's website for information on how to keep children safe.
