Tempe police are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect who reportedly tried to kidnap a woman on Saturday morning.

According to police, the suspect, described as an African-American man, tried to kidnap the victim near 5th and Roosevelt streets around 3 a.m.

Police say the victim was able to get away unharmed.

People in the area say a neighbor intervened and helped the young woman.

"We really just need to come together as a community, be very vigilant, and be aware of our surroundings," said Talia Fuentes, who has lived in the area for eight years. "We have a lot of new, young college students that have moved into the neighborhood."

Authorities describe the suspect as 20 to 25 years of age, weighing 200 pounds, and 6 feet tall. He has short brown hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a t-shirt and jeans in a dark-colored passenger car.

"I will be keeping an ear out, I will make sure that if I do wake up in the middle of the night -- make a point to get to the window and make sure -- if I notice anything or hear anything that I go out of my way to take note, or call the police if need be," Fuentes said.

If you have any information on the identity of this suspect or this crime, you're asked to call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311.
