Pinal County Sheriff's Office says a man is dead after a hit-and-run crash led to an officer-involved shooting overnight in San Tan Valley.

The incident began just before 11 p.m. Friday when a hit-and-run crash was reported at the intersection of Gary and Empire in San Tan Valley. PCSO says a Volkswagen Jetta was hit from behind two separate times by a 2014 Chevy truck, causing extensive damage to the Jetta.

An MCSO deputy was on scene of the original crash and caught up to the suspect's truck a short time later, but when he failed to yield to officials, a pursuit began with the deputy and a PCSO lieutenant.

PCSO says the truck had serious damage from the earlier crash and was driving on its rim, but finally pulled into a dirt area near Combs and Rittenhouse where the driver began driving erratically.

The truck drove head-on into a PCSO patrol vehicle that was stopped, injuring the sergeant inside.

The PCSO lieutenant and two sergeants at the scene exited their vehicles and ordered the driver to surrender, but the driver continued to accelerate directly toward one of the sergeants. At that time, the lieutenant and sergeants fired at the suspect's vehicle.

The truck came to a stop about 75 yards away where deputies found the man dead inside.

PCSO has not yet released the name of the suspect, but he has been described as a 55-year-old man from Peoria.

The sergeant hurt when a patrol car was hit only suffered minor injuries. Sheriff Paul Babeu says all of the PCSO units involved in the incident are well-trained professionals and have been on duty for at least 15 years.
