ALTURAS, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a sheriff's deputy in a northern California county near the Oregon border has been shot to death.
California Highway Patrol Officer Kristen Wilburn says the Modoc County Sheriff's deputy was fatally shot Wednesday by a suspect now in custody.
Wilburn says the deputy's name will not be released pending the notification of family.
The Modoc County Sheriff's Office says the deputy was involved in an active-shooter incident when he was shot.
It says the shooting happened on County Road 115 in a rural area about 5 miles outside Alturas, California. The office says other agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, the Alturas Police Department and the U.S. Forest Service, also responded to the scene.
