The Houston Police Department says three officers were shot near downtown Thursday.

Houston's mayor said the three officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Being a police officer is an inherently dangerous job," said Mayor Sylvester Turner.

The mayor said he spoke to the officers who are all in "good spirits."

Police say the incident started Thursday afternoon when police were responding to a call. Officers said the suspect saw them and jumped into a car and sped away.

When officers pursued the vehicle, police say it crashed and the suspect got out and started shooting.

After injuring the three officers, police say the suspect carjacked a person at gunpoint. Authorities said police pursued that vehicle to a home where the suspect again fired at officers. They were not hit, police said.

After several hours inside the home, police were able to take the suspect into custody.
