Michigan school district requiring students to lock up cell phones during classes

Students at the Saginaw Public School District will have to lock up their cell phone while they're at school.

Under a new rule, kids who bring their phone to school will have to put them in secured pouches that will remain locked until the end of the day.

Students in violation of the rule will be suspended or banned from bringing their phones on campus.

The new rule is in response to a recent drop in district test scores and the rising number of students performing below grade level.

"We found the pohnes were a distraction and are hoping to eliminate the distraction and increase achievement in our learning environment," Saginaw Public Schools superintendant Ramont M. Roberts said.
