DANVILLE, Ky. — Police in Kentucky are investigating after a man died Monday morning of an apparent accidental, self-inflicted wound from a crossbow bolt.

Danville Assistant Police Chief Glenn Doan said 46-year-old Jimmy J. Smith of Danville, Kentucky, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were called out about 10:15 a.m. to an area along Hartland Drive. Officials said Smith was found mortally injured with a wound from a crossbow bolt to his upper torso.

Police said foul play was not suspected. Investigators said they believe Smith was shooting targets in a backyard when a bolt accidentally discharged.

The case remains under investigation.
