FDA issues recalls for 9 dog food brands

It might be time to take your dog food back to the store, or throw it out all together.

The FDA has recently extended their recall of dry dog food for toxic levels of vitamin D to 9 brands and 12 different types of food.

The FDA's initial recall began in early December, after the organization heard complaints about different dog foods causing vitamin D toxicity after consumption.

"Testing found that samples of the dog food contained excessive, potentially toxic amounts of vitamin D," wrote the FDA. "Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, but very high amounts can cause serious health problems like kidney failure or death."

PetMD says signs of Vitamin D poisoning in dogs include:

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst (polydipsia)
  • Increased urination (polyuria)
  • Dark tarry feces containing blood
  • Blood in vomit
  • Loss of weight
  • Constipation
  • Seizures
  • Muscle tremors
  • Abdominal pain
  • Excessive drooling

If your dog is displaying these symptoms, the next course of action is to immediately see a veterinarian.
