A 6-week-old baby died Thursday morning after the girl's 21-year-old mother pushed the girl's stroller into the elevator shaft from the 23rd floor of a Brooklyn apartment complex, according to WCBS-TV.
The TV station reported that the elevator car was at least six floors below when the stroller carrying Areej Ali plunged.
WCBS reported that the elevator was out of service at the time of the incident. The apartment complex has also had 50 building code complaints levied against it, including four for the elevators, prior to Thursday's incident.
“Nobody trusts those elevators,” neighbor Harold Noel told the New York Daily News. “Everybody is scared to take that elevator. There's always problems. My own mom almost died in that elevator years ago."
