CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (AP) - A man accused of firing a gun at his estranged wife has been shot by Yavapai County authorities.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says 58-year-old William Nelson, of Dewey, was awaiting surgery in the hospital Sunday but is expected to survive his injury.

Nelson is expected to face charges upon his release.

According to Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn, Nelson's wife reported that her husband was following her along Highway 169 around 11 p.m. Saturday.

Nelson allegedly pulled up alongside her vehicle and shot at it.

The wife was not injured.

A deputy located Nelson's vehicle 20 minutes later on Highway 260 near Camp Verde and tried to initiate a stop.

Deputies say Nelson confronted them while armed.

A deputy fired a shot, hitting him in the leg.
