Would you buy a mailbox alarm system?

It's the season for getting and giving gifts, but those gifts may not always end up where you'd like them.

"There's always an uptick in mail theft during the holidays," David Birch, a U.S. Postal Inspector told KGUN9.

With that, City Council member Steve Kozachik wants to help people keep their mail secure.

A new strategy Kozachik he's suggesting is installing a mailbox alarm.

"It's a relatively little investment compared to what the cost, the potential cost could be for having your mail stolen," Kozachik told KGUN9.

The alarm ranges in price, usually starting around $20.

The Postal Service won't officially recommend a mailbox alarm system but says it can't hurt to have.

They say the best way to keep your mail safe is to have a locking mailbox.

"We find that thieves tend pass those by," Birch told KGUN9.

That's what Ronni Kotwica, the president of the Palo Verde Neighborhood Association advises as well.

"If it's one more thing to harden the target, sure, go for it. Get a lockbox, that makes it even easier," Kotwica told KGUN9.

Kotwica says she's old fashioned and will stick with her metal lockbox instead of getting an alarm.

She supports the idea to make it harder for thieves to steal your gifts this holiday season.
