U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Arizona’s Port of Lukeville arrested two U.S. citizens after seizing nearly 500 pounds worth of marijuana over the weekend.
A 21-year-old man driving an SUV was stopped coming in from Mexico on Saturday when dogs alerted officers at the checkpoint. An inspection revealed nearly 373 pounds of marijuana within the tires and in the gas tank, according to a media release. The street value was estimated at more than $186,000.
On Sunday, a 25-year-old man in a sedan was driving across the border when another dog sniffed out suspected drugs. Agents found several packages of marijuana in the trunk weighing more than 122 pounds. The value on that seizure was estimated at about $61,000.
Custody of both suspects were handed off to ICE's investigative unit.
