TUCSON, Ariz. — The words high tide, photosynthesis and constellations aren't typically terms you hear in a dance studio, but at Utterback Middle school that's how the class is run.

Elena Quach, Utterback's dance teacher, and Emma Novak, the sixth grade science, decided to put their two classes together.

"They are both combining the science standards and bridging them into the dance standards," Principal Taranika Sanders said.

She came to this school just over a year ago with an idea to rebuild the arts program.

"One of the first things I noticed about Utterback when I first landed here was the beautiful facilities that existed," Sanders said. "It's just designed for art instruction for freedom and movement so I really wanted to tap into those facilities and bring out our students capacities."

The concept of combining core classes with arts is only the beginning. Principal Sanders said the goal is to continuing building up the arts program for the future.
