Storm-damaged section of northern Arizona highway reopens

A storm-damaged northern Arizona highway used to reach the Grand Canyon's North Rim, Lake Powell and southern Utah is reopen after crews worked around the clock for 48 hours to make temporary repairs.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says U.S. 89 reopened Friday night north of Cameron Trading Post on the Navajo Nation after crews filled in a 30--foot (9-meter) section of the highway that washed out late Wednesday night due to runoff from remnants of Tropical Storm Rosa.

One person who crossed the section as it gave way died after being hit by another vehicle.

A temporary detour that nearly doubled the driving distances between Flagstaff and Page was used during the closure.
