TUSD touts improved student conduct violations; teachers still concerned

TUCSON, Ariz. — TUSD kicked off this school year with a new Code of Conduct after years of severe discipline issues.

It's been at the forefront -- ever since KGUN 9 launched our investigation a few years ago that revealed -- school leaders downplayed and under-reported violations that led to more violence and defiance on some campuses.

At Tuesday night's board meeting, the district is expected to report there are fewer fights and more mediations this year -- fewer suspension days and better interventions -- compared to the 2017-18 school year.

But feedback from teachers who responded to a recent survey reveals discipline problems in the classrooms are still a major concern. It shows a majority of teachers 77 percent reported no change -- little or no improvement this school year.

The board members may vote Tuesday night on a new updated Code of Conduct to help address the teacher's issues.
