The board unanimously approved Doctor Gabriel Trujillo as Interim Superintendent, but now the board has to decide whether or not they will look for candidates themselves or hire an outside firm to search.
The board passed a motion to allow them to explore options for the superintendent search. Board member Mark Stegeman moved to have President Michael Hicks lead the search for consultants.
The board will also put out a procurement so people can apply for the position.
Several board members wanted to ensure candidates from outside of Tucson and Arizona would be included in the search. Former Superintendent H.T. Sanchez was found by an outside firm.
Doctor Trujillo will serve until June 30th, with the option to extend.
Dr. Trujillo served as TUSD's Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction since last August.
Before his time at TUSD, Dr. Trujillo was the Principal at Trevor Brown High School and a District Administrator, both in the Phoenix Union High School District.
