TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson Unified School District Board member Rachael Sedgwick tells KGUN9 she will be in Jamaica for the next few months.
The TUSD board member spoke exclusively to KGUN9 about her plans to work for the district remotely abroad.
She tells KGUN9 she'll be living in Jamaica over the next few months.
Sedgwick says she'll be gone until May and expects to be back before graduation.
"This is an important move for me personally and professionally and it's something that I feel is very important that I have to do at this time," Sedgwick said. "Being a board member is a volunteer position and so we don't receive compensation for the time that we put in and so I'm at a point where I have to make a decision."
She plans to attend board meetings held in her absence over the phone.
TUSD Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo says he's confident in Sedgwick's ability to fulfill her duties as a board member in the coming months.
“I have full faith and confidence in Ms. Sedgwick’s commitment and dedication to fulfilling her duties as a Governing Board member for the Tucson Unified School District," Trujillo said in a statement. "She has assured me of her commitment to telephonically participate in all meetings during her absence and to continue to represent the community that elected her to serve.”
