TUCSON, Ariz. — The gates opened for the first time Wednesday at the new south side expansion of the Kino Sports Complex.

Kino Sports officials, community leaders and residents attended a ribbon cutting and open house Wednesday afternoon to celebrate.

The new facility stretches 167 acres with 12 lit fields and 20 lit pickleball courts. Reenie Ochoa, who is the director of the complex, says the added space will bring more events to the area, which could benefit surrounding businesses.

"When there are events, they really releish the extra business," Ochoa said. "So this being on south of I-10, the QT across the street, the Fry's, a number of other businesses are going to see an uptick in business."

The Fort Lowell Shootout will be the first big event to kick off the expansion. That starts Saturday morning at 8 a.m. The facility is open to the public -- there's more information on the Kino Sports Complex website.
