Shannon Johnson and her husband Simon are heartbroken and angry after they say someone stole her customized, bariatric wheelchair from their home last week.
“It is my lifeline,” Shannon said. “It’s what I use on a daily basis to get around town.”
Shannon, says without the chair, customized to hold her weight, she's trapped in her home.
“Without it I can’t go grocery shopping, I can’t pick up my own medications, I can’t do anything that makes me independent,” she said.
The chair is too wide to get through their front door so Simon usually chains it to the stairs outside their apartment. He told police someone stole it between 8:30 p.m. and midnight March 23.
“I feel like it’s my fault,” he said. “I can’t understand why someone would do this.”
Shannon’s insurance covered the cost of the chair. The Johnson’s say to replace it out of pocket would cost tens of thousands of dollars they don’t have.
Until police find the people who stolen the chair and the chair itself, Shannon says she is stuck at home, “I just want my chair back.”
