Tucson Vice Mayor says 911 hold times down in 2019 from 2018

Stats provided are from Tucson's Vice Mayor Paul Cunningham who said they're from the city's Public Safety Communication's Department.

According to those stats, the average hold time for primary calls in 2019 was down to 21 seconds.

Hold times for priority calls, think incidents involving weapons, the stats say those are down to seven seconds.

Cunningham calls it good news, but he says it won't stay that way without keeping the number of responding officer steady.

"It's encouraging to hear, it's encouraging to see that but let's see how we're doing next year, it's good momentum but we're still not over the hump yet."

From 2018 to 2019 Tucson's Public Safety Communications Department reported lower hold times on 9-1-1, according to stats provided by Cunningham.

He said a good year doesn't guarantee that things will continue to improve.

"It's nice to see that steps are in the right direction but so many times we've seen good momentum kind of fizzle out," Cunningham said.

He suggests that fizzle may have to do with how many officers are available to answer those 9-1-1 calls.

"if everyone is fully staffed and everyone is able to meet their optimal roles, we're going to see those response times improve, we're going to see the hold times be reduced and we're also hopefully going to see the crime rate go down."

"From the police officer on the street to the 9-1-1 operator, to the Tucson Fire Department, the whole system is actually connected."

Cunningham said he's seen preliminary numbers for last year.

"We're pretty encouraged and I'm pretty confident we'll see an improvement from '18 to '19."

Ultimately, he said there's a goal to reach this year that can help keep 9-1-1 hold times low.

"We've got to continue our goal to have a thousand responding officers by the end of the calendar year."

Cunningham said there are about 840 officers in the Tucson Police Department as of this report.

He added there are prospects in training now, inching the department closer to his goal of 1000 officers.
