Car jacking suspect, deputy involved in shooting both identified

Authorities say that just before 2 p.m., deputies responded to reports of an armed robbery carjacking in the 4100 block of East Dover Stravanue.

They later learned this incident was connected to another carjacking call in the Tucson Police jurisdiction in the 5000 block of East Valencia.

The incidents also took place on the freeway of Valencia and I-10 the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Deputies were able to make contact with the vehicle near Catalina and Drexel. However, the vehicle led them on a pursuit. The vehicle deputies to Aviation just West of 34th street, where the vehicle came to a stop after veering into the median.

PCSD had multiple units in the area and had reports there was one possible hostage in the vehicle.

The suspect, Elijah Jamal Lawrence, 24, waved a gun at deputies and victim during the pursuit.

Deputies confronted Lawrence outside of the vehicle after it stopped. Lawrence then pointed a gun at the hostage again. According to PCSD, at that point, shots were fired by Sgt. Kevin Kubitskey, who has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation. 

Lawrence is in critical condition at Banner University Medical Center.

The carjacking suspect was shot. The male victim and deputies did not sustain any injuries.

The male suspect was transported to Banner UMC. 

An initial investigation by PCSD revealed that one deputy fired at the suspect.
