TUCSON, Ariz. — City Council Member Paul Cunningham will present TSA employees with $4,600 in fuel cards at noon on Friday, the first day of February.
In a statement released by the Public Information office, Cunningham's motive for the fuel cards was inspired by the recent partial government shutdown.
“The shutdown is over, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that TSA employees will still not get paid until February 11th,” said Council Member Cunningham. “This is an extra hardship for these employees and this is a way for our community to provide them some assistance and ensure that they have the resources to make the drive to work and care for their families.”
During the shutdown, the American Federation of Government Employees determined 9,539 workers in Arizona were affected by the shutdown.
The Community Foundation of Southern Arizona via the Federal Employee Relief Fund are the group responsible for providing the cards.
