A Tucson pharmaceutical company may have found a treatment effective against the Zika virus.

HSRx Biopharmaceutical creates drugs out of plant extracts.

They tested one of their drugs that works well against influenza against Zika and lab trials showed the drug effectively killed the virus.

"We believe it would be a treatment and hopefully it would lead it to a curative state where they would no longer have it in their their body and they would quickly rid it from their body," Tommy Sullivan, CEO of HSRx Biopharmaceutical said.

The next step for the company is to begin testing the drug on people. That process should begin in early 2017.

If successful, it will seek accelerated drug approval from the FDA.
