Kay Read was 62 years old when she disappeared from her Tucson home near Golf Links and Kolb on Feb. 15, 2008. Now the man accused in her disappearance is finally facing trial.

In 2014, nearly 7 years after Read's disappearance, Tucson police arrested Luis Vargas on first degree murder, second degree burglary and kidnapping.

Police said they believed Vargas is the man seen in surveillance photos trying to use an ATM card stolen from Read.

Sandra Cannon taught Sunday school with Read at St. Paul's United Methodist.

"I think it's going to help bring some closure and answers," said Cannon. "And I know for her family, for all of us, it's a difficult time to go back over those memories. They're still very vivid."

Though she is presumed dead, authorities never found Read's body.

Jury selection for the trial began Tuesday and opening statements could begin Wednesday.
