It was Valentines Day 2008 when a Tucson Sunday school teacher disappeared.

In 2014, nearly 7 years after Read's disappearance, Tucson police arrested Luis Vargas on first degree murder, second degree burglary and kidnapping.

Eight years later, her suspected killer went on trial and today listened to opening statements.

"...and her took her from that house. He stole her car.  He stole her debit cards. And he tried to get money from that ATM. And her murdered her," said Prosecutor Victoria Otto.

The Defense Attorney maintains Vargas was accused because police bungled the investigation, which went on for years.

"They did not pursue suspects.  They did not get DNA from suspects, because they had one purpose at this time. Luis Vargas is our man, and we don't want to hear about anyone else," said Defense Attorney John Sando.

One of the key pieces of evidence will be surveillance pictures of a man using Read's debit card, and prosecutors maintain that man was Luis Vargas.
