TPD find homemade explosive device during traffic stop near southside

TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson Police officers found a homemade explosive device during a traffic stop near the southside Saturday.

Police say the traffic stop happened in the parking lot of El Super near 6th Avenue off of Benson Highway.

TPD says during the stop the officer could visibly see the device in the center console.

The officer was able to detain the driver.

The officer went around the vehicle when the passenger began fighting with the officer. The passenger attempted to run away, but the officer was able to detain the passenger.

TPD says the passenger was carrying methamphetamine and gun.

Tucson Police Department Bomb Squad says the device is considered an improvised explosive device, which is considered to be homemade.

Police say the passenger is a prohibited possessor, and will also be facing charges for carrying methamphetamine.

Police say no one has been charged with the device as of now.

The parking lot is now reopen.
