Tucson International Airport started its direct flight service to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Friday.
This marks the first time travelers won't have to make a connecting flight in eight years.
The project took years to complete as the Tucson Metro Chamber worked with local businesses to raise $3 million dollars as a revenue guarantee to American Airlines.
The Tucson Metro Chamber also arranged flight times so customers can catch other connecting flights.
