Thieves stealing tattoo equipment, six shops hit

Posted
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - In the past month, thieves have targeted six Tucson tattoo shops.

The thieves have stolen only tattoo equipment, skipping over laptops and other expensive items.

"They took the tools that we use to make a living, that we support our families with making a living, that we keep the doors open with so we can continue to create art. They took the things that we need to keep ourselves alive," said Tracy Ledbetter, owner of Southbound Studios.

Southbound was hit on Nov. 16. The thieves stole a total of 60 tattoo machines, which put four artists out of business.

They have started to order new equipment, but other tattoo artists from across the country have donated items so they can get back to work earlier.

The same has been done for artists at Old Towne Tattoo, whose equipment was also all stolen by thieves.

Old Towne's former owner died of cancer just a few months ago. The artists kept his office exactly the way he left it as a memorial to him, but the thieves also stole all of his old equipment.

The first place that was hit was Divine Tattoo on Oct. 29. The thieves returned the following night and could not get in the barricaded door, but they tried another door on Nov. 2.

During both successful burglaries, the thieves only stole two tool boxes with thousands of dollars worth of equipment, but did not take everything like in the other burglaries.

Owner Derek Thornhill said he considers them to be lucky that they were not cleaned out like some other stores. He said he believes they may have been a "test run" for the others.

After Divine, 4 Forty 4 Tattoo had an attempted break-in about a week later. Then, came the theft at Southbound Studios. Tattoo Avenue had another failed attempt just days later. Sacred Art's Speedway location was hit next. Finally, Old Towne was broken into most recently.

Many tattoo shops, including those who have not been burglarized, have upped security. Ledbetter said some people are even sleeping in their shops.

Tucson Police Public Information Officer Chris Goins said the department is investigating the cases and believes they may be linked.
