TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Dry brush on a Tempe peak has prompted organizers this year to cancel the fireworks show that's part of a popular New Year's Eve celebration.

Downtown Tempe, the organization in suburban Phoenix that produces the annual celebration, says launching fireworks would be unsafe on Hayden Butte.

Also known as "A Mountain," the Tempe landmark overlooks Mill Avenue, where thousands gather each year on New Year's Eve. Part of the butte also extends onto the Arizona State University campus.

Downtown Tempe says other events at venues along the street will carry on as planned.
