Suspect identified in Walmart shooting incident

BENSON, Ariz. — Benson Police have identified the man who fired a shot in a Benson Walmart Parking lot on Saturday, according to San Pedro Valley News Sun.

The newspaper reports that Benson Police Chief Paul Moncada says 26-year-old Alejandro Ponce was not an active shooter.

The newspaper reports also that Chief Moncada says the incident did not occur inside the store, and the weapon was not pointed at anyone.

Mayor of Benson Tony King said Benson Police officers and Cochise County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived on scene within minutes of the incident that happened just after 6:30 p.m.

King says "I'm just happy to know that this wasn't more than it was." He praised the Benson law enforcement for the work on this case.

Benson Police say Ponce is in custody and is charged with endangerment, recklessly handling a weapon, and firing a shot within city limits.

Benson Police say no one was hurt, and there is no danger to the public.
