COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Officials have reduced the speed limit on a stretch of the highway near the New Mexico border following several collisions caused by two dust storms.
Trooper Kameron Lee, spokesperson with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, says the speed has been reduced from 75 mph to 45 mph from milepost 374-378.
The speed reduction is effective beginning Friday, said Lee.
Numerous pile-ups resulted from dust storms that blew through the area.
DPS Sergeant Stewart Shupe was working a wreck that involved seven vehicles when a semi came out of a dust storm and plowed into his cruiser on I-10 about 30 miles east of Willcox.
On several occasions last week, DPS closed a 62-mile stretch of Interstate 10 between US 191 in southeastern Arizona and Lordsburg, New Mexico.
