TUCSON, Ariz.-- Sierra Vista's curbside recycling bins will be replaced by a facility on July 1st.

Sierra Vista city officials say that this new recycling service will replace its current curbside pickup program with a “one-stop drop” facility free of charge.

The new location will be at 7201 E. Hwy 90 at mile marker 325. It will be open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. starting July 1.

Anyone can drop off their recyclables at the facility, no matter where they live, officials said. You do not need to desperate the different types of recycling, since that will be done by hand at the facility, in order to aviod contamination.

“Contamination, in the recycling world, means that different types of recyclable materials are mixed together in the same bin, like plastic with aluminum,” says Darrin Stensby, refuse supervisor for the City of Sierra Vista. “The hand sorting process also ensures that non-recyclable materials don’t accidentally wind up with recyclables, so we’ll ultimately have a cleaner and more marketable product.”

Materials accepted for recycling are clean aluminum and steel cans, corrugated cardboard, and plastic containers with the numbers 1 or 2.

If you're wondering what to do now with your blue bin, city officials say those who prefer to return their blue bin can do so by calling the Public Works Department at (520) 458-5775 or you can use it for your own personal storage needs with no additional costs.
