A proposal to prevent voters from casting ballots using the names of the deceased has received preliminary approval in the Senate despite no evidence of the voter fraud occurring in Arizona.

Rep. David Stevens of Sierra Vista sponsored the bill that would expand the Secretary of State's office efforts to match voter registration with death records to ensure integrity of elections.

A spokesman for the Secretary of State says the office hasn't prosecuted a single case of this type of voter fraud in at least the last five years.

The bill has so far received bi-partisan support. The House passed House Bill 2084 unanimously last month.

The proposal received initial approval Monday. It now awaits a formal vote.
