More than one billion packages will be relievers between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and porch pirates are on the hunt.

It's really easy for people looking to take advantage to just follow the delivery truck around and pick up your order before you get home...but something as simple as having a doorbell camera can be a great deterrent...or a great way to catch someone.

Nextdoor reports that more than 43% of people have had a package stolen from their home, and more than 40% of people have had multiple packages taken.

Police say it can be tough to investigate package theft and tough to find theives once it happens, so taking defensive measures is the best way to go.

Police say make sure to face your cameras toward the road to capture the theif's car or license plate.

Get a front porch lockbox so carriers can lock your packages up.

Send packages to your work office, or ask the package to be left at the warehouse for pickup.

Ask your neighbors for help if they'll be home. More than 79% of people report they ask their neighbors for help collecting packages.

You can also subscribe to package alerts. For UPS, check out the “My Choice” program.

For the US Postal Service, you can sign up for email alerts too through Informed Delivery.
