Saturday storms bring Tucson a wet evening

Posted

Storms on Saturday brought flooding, wet roadways, power outages, and rushing washes to the Tucson metro area.

KGUN9's Max Darrow spent the evening driving around town, finding trouble spots all around the community. Rain on the east side was accompanied by thunder, lightning, and wind, causing many around the Broadway and Wilmot area to lose power.

Towards Midtown, a tree was down for a while, blocking a lane of traffic on Pima St. Around the corner, Beverly St. was turned into a river -- a thick layer of water covered the road.

Moving more towards the Northwest Side, hit hard by the storms, Pima County Sheriff's Deputies were re-routing traffic on River Rd. between Alvernon and Swan because the wash was flooding the road. On scene, they repeated the mantra heard through monsoon: "Turn around, don't drown."

Some people did try to drive through flooded roads, ignoring the warnings. One car got stuck near the Winterhaven neighborhood near Fort Lowell and Country Club. Tucson Police showed up to help out, the car was eventually towed out once the water level went down.

But despite the hectic evening, as of 10:30 p.m., no injuries or serious damage was reported as a result of the storms.
