Republicans lining up for chance to challenge Grijalva in 2018

Representative Raul Grijalva will not run unopposed in 2018. Sergio Arellano is one of at least two Republicans who have announced their candidacy for Arizona’s third congressional district, which encompasses much of southern Arizona.

Arellano, 34, served in the Army for 10 years after graduating from Pueblo High School.  He says his candidacy will focus on improving the economy in this part of Arizona. He says many people who grow up in southern Arizona communities leave for better job prospects in Phoenix.

Arellano will face Edna San Miguel in a primary election, according to Federal Election Commission filings available online.

Defeating Rep. Grijalva has been impossible for republicans since he won his seat in 2003. In 2016, he ran unopposed in the general election.

Arellano says he believes voters in CD 3 want new faces in congress, “I think people are tired of a lack of representation. We need something new. We're tired of the same old same old here I don't think enough is being done for our residents and our citizens here in our district.”
