Congressman David Cicilline (sihs-ihl-EE'-nee) has visited the border between the United States and Mexico as controversy grows over the Trump administration's policy to separate children from their parents.

The Providence Journal reports that the Rhode Island Democrat joined several other members of Congress in McAllen, Texas, over the weekend. The group visited a border patrol processing center, a port of entry and a detention center for children.

The Trump administration implemented a "zero tolerance" policy that refers all cases of illegal entry for prosecution. The policy means adults who enter the U.S. are prosecuted and therefore separated from their children, who are not.

Cicilline says the policy is "contrary to our founding values."

He says there were chain-linked pens at the processing center, with entire areas "that are just children."
