TUCSON, Ariz. — A group of Arizona lifeguards are being recognized for their excellence by the American Red Cross.

Six Marana lifeguards were presented with lifesaving awards Friday afternoon for how they handled a recent situation when someone at the pool was unresponsive.

Back in July, a man sitting near the pool appeared to be sleeping, but one of the lifeguards realized that wasn't the case and activated their emergency action plan.

"My team responded great," lifeguard Kevin Goodrich said. "I could not be happier with how they responded, and that day -- I was just overwhelmed not only by the emergency itself, but just how well everybody acted, and how calm they all were during the incident."

Goodrich has been a certified Red Cross lifeguard instructor for about three years.

Through their efforts, the man regained consciousness on the way to the hospital.
