TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - After a slow holiday season, the American Red Cross has an emergency need for blood and platelet donations.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 300 blood drives across 20 states have been closed due to severe weather. This means that more than 9,500 donations have not been collected.

The Red Cross is looking for donors of all types.

Interim Communications Manager Jan Hale said, "Eligible donors are urged to make an appointment to give blood now and help ensure blood products are available for patients locally, and across the country, including areas severely impacted by winter weather."

The Red Cross must collect 14,000 blood donations every day for the patients at nearly 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide.
