PHOENIX - Public records show that dozens of Arizona families in a taxpayer-funded scholarship program have account balances of $50,000 or more.

The Arizona Capitol Times reported Thursday that documents also show nine families have accumulated more than $100,000 over multiple years.

Education officials say the program provides families with a state-funded voucher to pay for private education or another alternative to public school.

The program helps students with a disability and others. Opponents question how families are amassing so much money, saying they aren't using the program the way most taxpayers would expect.
