Rare tornado warning issued for Pinal, Pima County

MARANA, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A rare tornado warning was issued for southern Arizona tonight.

The warning only lasted about an hour mainly for Red Rock, Avra Valley, Silverbell and northern Marana.

The last tornado warning issued for our area was at least five years ago.

Arizona averages four tornadoes per year. Most are in remote areas.

Funnel clouds are common for our area in the spring, but they rarely make contact with the ground thus they do not become tornadoes.

The National Weather Service has not confirmed a tornado touched the ground or formed.
