MESA, Ariz. (AP) - A police pursuit ended in a dirt lot where the driver was taken into custody before a stolen car burst into flames.
The Pinal County Sheriff's Office says dispatchers got a call Tuesday morning about a suspicious car being driven in a neighborhood in San Tan Valley.
A deputy found the car parked and the driver passed out at the wheel, but the car then drove off, starting a chase.
Sheriff's spokesman Mark Clark says the car entered Maricopa County before getting stuck in soft dirt in a lot near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
Officers took the driver into custody.
The car then burst into flames. Clark says friction from its spinning wheels set brush under the car on fire.
Clark says the man likely will face charges in both counties.
