Westside preschool garden destroyed by vandals

The Mary Belle McCorkle Academy of Excellence was vandalized earlier this month, and now they need your help to rebuild. Vandals smashed pots, ripped up plants, and broke the butterfly terrarium.

The school has spent six years collecting donations to build this garden, and it is used by hundreds of students. Preschoolers use it most often, but before and after school programs garden there as well. The preschoolers are also joined by the seventh and eighth grade students who help and mentor them in the garden.

The older students were especially upset, and many helped clean up the glass shards that were scattered across the play area.

The school is trying to use this as a learning opportunity to teach kindness and resilience in the face of challenges.

If you'd like to help the school, here is what they need most.

Wish List:

  • Security camera
  • 10 large fiberglass pots
  • Potting soil
  • Annual flowers
  • Shade trellis
  • Hummingbird feeders
  • Wash basin & hose
  • 8 yards of sandbox sand
  • 12" x 12" pavers (12)
  • short garden wall between sand & wood chips (75 cinderblocks & cap blocks)

If you'd like to donate money, checks can be made payable to: Mary Belle McCorkle Pre-K - 8 Academy of Excellence. The address is 4455 S. Mission Rd, Tucson, AZ 85746.

And make a note that the money is to be used as a "gift donation for preschool."
