Pima County Sheriff's deputy shoots and kills man holding person at knifepoint in Catalina

UPDATE: 7:05 p.m.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said one of their deputies shot and killed a man holding someone at knifepoint in Catalina.

In a press release, they said a 911 caller reported the situation. When the deputy arrived on scene they saw a fight unfolding.

“The deputy gave commands for the suspect to drop the knife," said Keith Bee with the sheriff's department. "However he did not comply, prompting the deputy to discharge his firearm striking the suspect.”

The Golder Ranch Fire Department was then called and they gave the man medical attention, but he died at the scene. The person they were holding at knife-point was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said they will do an internal investigation into the shooting to see if any policy violations occured.

UPDATE: 3:48 p.m.

KGUN 9 has learned that the shooting took place at a counseling center operated by Catalina Behavioral Health.

Neighbors told reporter Reyna Preciado that the neighborhood is normally pretty quiet.

In a statement, Catalina Behavioral Health officials extended its gratitude toward law enforcement for "its swift and courageous response to an isolated threat on our campus this morning."

"Their prompt action safeguarded the well-being of our residents and staff, and their bravery is truly commendable. We are profoundly grateful for their dedication to ensuring our community's safety," the statement read.

Pima County Sheriff's Department is reporting a shooting involving a deputy that took place Friday morning at North Bowman Road and East Golder Ranch Road in Catalina.

The Sheriff's Department will be holding a media briefing later today.
