Authorities have identified a man who died after the small plane he was piloting crashed short of a runway at Prescott's airport.

Yavapai County Sheriff's officials announced Thursday that the victim was 71-year-old Brian Branter of Prescott.

The county medical examiner had to check dental records to identify the man.

Prescott police say the one person aboard the single-engine plane was killed when it crashed about a quarter-mile (0.4 kilometer) from the approach end of a runway on Aug. 29.

A sheriff's office photograph of the crash site showed charred wreckage in a field adjacent to the airport.

Authorities say the pilot had left Prescott and was intending to return to the airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
