PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a man is dead after being shot by officers responding to a 911 call about an attack on a female family member of the man.

Sgt. Vince Lewis says the woman was treated a hospital for serious injuries after she ran to a neighbor's home for help Monday.

According to Lewis, the 47-year-old man left his home with a gun and a knife while officers were speaking with the neighbor.

Lewis says the officers shot the man in the street after they ordered him to drop the weapons and he refused.

The officers were not hurt.

The incident occurred near North 43rd Avenue and West Thunderbird Road.
