TUCSON, Ariz. -- Tucson Fire got new turnouts on Tuesday.
The department is getting 200 new sets as part of the Tucson Delivers program.
The new turnouts will be used to replace old sets, and in some cases, to give firefighters a 2nd set. Fire officials say, secondary turnouts can be very important when primary turnouts are being cleaned.
Another round of turnout sizing is underway at Fire Central (HQ) this wk. This round of turnouts (3 of 3) are a part of the #TucsonDelivers effort. For some FFs this replaces an aging set OR gives them a 2nd set so they can clean their primary set after a fire. #StaySafeTucson pic.twitter.com/6tkznvIcdu

Jessica Nolte, with TFD, says having clean and fresh turnouts can actually reduce the risk of cancer for firefighters.

Nolte says, "it's not only the latest technology in terms of the thermal layers to protect them from the various parts of the fire environment, it's also the latest technology in terms of the particulate blocking technology from the carcinogens and known hazards."
