TUCSON, Ariz. — New technology for dentist is making the process of getting a cavity filled easier for Tucson families.

Solea is a Carbon Dioxide computer-aided dental laser system that uses pulsed energy to help with hard and soft issue. It's a COT laser that taps at your tooth 10,000 times per second.

The dental laser’s 9.3 micron wavelength vaporizes tooth structure with unprecedented speed and precision.

Dr. Atty Smith in Oro Valley has been using the Solea technology for the past 8 months.

She said she got the device because it eliminates two big fears her patients have, the drill and needle.

"It allows us to do the same procedure, get the cavity out or the filling out, sculpt the gums whatever we're needing to do and they're virtually pain-free," Dr. Smith said.

Her patient Solaris Graves said this laser made her experience at the dentist so much easier.

"(you get to) avoid the pain, avoid what follows after going to the dentist like having to wait to eat," Graves said.

Dr. Smith said she's used it on hundreds of patients, both kids and adults, and said everyone's been really excited about it.

She said with all her experience, she thinks this could be the future of dentistry.
